Totem animal journey
DSC09968 2.JPG

Most of us want to find our totem animal and rightly so. We like to know which animals watch over us and what teachings they have. Sometimes you will be surprised finding out that your totem animal isn’t what you had expected at all, but remember it may be what you need at this time in your life. Your totem animal can change over time or may remain with you your whole life. As you get familiar over time you and your totem animals can work together to bring healing into the world and bring power and strength to your own life.

You can use the PDF in the previous Unit two on Zuni Fetishes to find out the meaning of your animal sign. I also recommend the book "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews for additional information on all animals and their medicine. Often when I see an animal on a road trip or even just a walk I will look up to see what wisdom they have to share.

I love working animal medicine into my art work to share not only their beauty but also the wisdom that they share.

In part one of this unit we will be taking a short journey to find your totem animal. Of course there are other ways to find them, you can set your intention before bed to meet your totem animal in a dream, perhaps you have an animal you have always be attracted too, or you can go visit a shaman and have them find it for you. And there is no guarantee you will find your totem animal on this journey it may take many. It is important to set your intention for any journey you make. So before the journey set your intention to find your totem animal or power animal.

Before we journey please smudge yourself this will ground you and also open you up to experience what is needed.

animal totem necklace

In this fun unit we will be cutting the heads off of plastic animals to make a totem animal necklace. Sounds barbaric but it is just plastic and you might find you can use other parts of the animal for other projects.

Of course you can use any animal components you have on hand, I find the plastic animals by Schleich are quite realistic and good quality and not that expensive. You can find them at most toys stores or even farm stores. I like seeing them in person because they are all a bit different, of course buying them from the online source I recommend in the supply list works fine too.

We will also be playing with covering plastic rings with fabric scrapes, thread, whatever you may have on hand.

We will be using some larger soldered rings as in Unit one to help stage the placement of our covered fabric rings.

And lastly I will show you how to add healing herbs and oils to your pieces to bring some extra healing into them. Not only will they smell good but they will hold extra medicine.

You can refer to the PDF in Unit one for the medicine certain herbs carry in the smudging. These herbs don't have to be burned to be help full. And of course use what resonates with you.

Watch the video below to make your own animal totem necklace full of healing energy.

Pick some plastic animals that resonate with you. Of course you can use any animal component you have if you prefer.

Cutting the heads off is easy with a jewelry saw and vise. Cutting them at a angle makes them seem more realistic.

Surrounding the heads in the fabric covered rings really brings them to life and gives them a place of honor in your piece

Animals totems are sacred

Finding your animal totem or power animal is a personnel and sacred thing. Don't feel you need to share it with just anybody. It's almost more sacred when less people know. Honor them and acknowledge them, your relationship with them will grow in time and know that they are always there for you as are all spirit guides, teachers and angels.
